In the musical Les Miserables about the French Revolution there is a scene where the young soldier Marius is left sitting at an empty table with empty chairs where his friends used to sit.

He sings, ‘there’s a grief that can’t be spoken, there’s a pain goes on and on, empty chairs and empty tables where my friends are dead and gone.

We were all children once with dreams that sat at tables with us.

We talked and played with them, poured tea for them and believed them, why wouldn’t we?

Marius continues, ‘Here they talked of revolution, here it was they lit the flame, here they sang about tomorrow but tomorrow never came.

My friends were the dreams, ideas, imagination and flames that guided me into my tomorrow.

This article is a reflection of a life lived with and without creativity and the unbearable weight of creativity.

It is also for those of you that have had brilliant inventions, business ideas and dreams that were there in one moment and then vanished in the blink of an eye.

I’ve been trying to understand how to support my creative friends that sit at my table with me.

I’ve been learning to support the many creative surges that have arrived in me and not throw them off like a deer in the wild shaking off an attack.

So that I can feel the satisfaction of my creative work and not the failure and losses that I have experienced.

As well as to support the friends that have made their way into my life.

These beautiful ideas arrived in me without me knowing how to support them.

Ideas, music, songs, workshops, adventures and dreams fell by the wayside screaming at me as they slowly faded away out of my reach.

Their screams developed a fear of the rising creative tides in me.

These rising tides felt like Tsunamis.

My life’s work has been to build an inner support system brick by brick inside the mortar of my body to hold these creative tides of imagination and genius.

I have waded through the judgements in me that said, ‘you better get going or else’, or ‘work harder,’ and one particular torture, ‘time is running out!

Marius sings, ‘In the table in the corner they could see a world reborn, and they rose with voices ringing and I can hear them now the very words that they had sung!’

Echos from my visions and dreams that rose with my voice singing, and then fell onto the battlefield having no inner support to hold them.

This unbearable weight of creativity.

I have now learned to slow down my nervous system enough to be able to hold this energy and stand still inside of each creative idea without it knocking me down to the ground.

Now I can hold the weight of it.

With rooted feet and legs, hips, belly, heart and voice I can hold and support this weight of creativity that has felt unbearable to me before.

To sing beautifully requires a body that can hold the weight of a voice and the feelings that accompany the sound.

This is what makes the study of singing the best teacher of support that I know of.

I have built a supportive body that holds my creative ideas like a good parent might.

I have the discernment and love for each idea as it enters my purview as I try not to react in panic as this surge of imagination lands on me with its weight.

The weight of it reminding me of other weights that landed on me at other times.

Knowing the difference.

Knowing how to respond.

Having a choice.

My beautiful ideas have fallen through the cracks and through my hands so many times that I believed that I would never be able to hold them and nurture them into existence.

I had to learn to grow up around each idea enough for it to trickle into me gently and not roughhouse me as it arrived.

Singing and the study of singing has taught me this.

I have also witnessed this torture in my students over the years.  They come with a strong desire to sing and create but without knowing how to support themselves in this.

The powerful energy of creativity and expression arises in them and the only seeming option is to push it down and step on it because of the lack of support that person had in their upbringing.

Unsupported creative genius can make a mess inside of a persons body as the powerful repressed energy of life gets caught and trapped inside.

Aches and pains move around like phantom limbs and illness and disease grow up into adulthood, instead of the beautiful works of art that are waiting for them at chairs and tables.

I help people to find their voice whether it be through singing or speaking.

Creative energy is the essence and backbone of the voice and it needs support for it to align and flow freely within us.

Supporting  this creative, flowing power by slowing down enough to recognize itself again for the innocent life force that it is.

Being able to recognize the difference between; the natural rising of the creative life force and the fear of this life force.

The old paradigm of the patriarchy puts as its bench mark of success – Struggle, Punishment, Pushing and Suffering.

We need a new paradigm and I have been building one.

They say a creative life is courageous.

They say it can make some go mad.

We all have this energy in us.

Some have more access to it than others.

Some have a harder time with it than others.

It has been my struggle and my greatest teacher.

It has helped me to give birth to my Voice Connections work and to give life to a whole other creative expression that I would have never expected had I not had Empty Chairs at Empty Tables.

Oh my friends my friends forgive me, that I live and you are gone, there’s a grief that can’t be spoken there’s a pain goes on and on.”

May we all pull up a chair at a table and not be afraid of who sits down.

Chiaroscuro – dark and light

Mind your tone! Watch your tone with me! You may or may not remember these words from your younger days? We can’t help the tone of our voice telling on us! The truth is inside the tone and not the actual words we are saying. It is our Living Word. Let’s see what’s...

We are like trees…

We are like trees… We are like trees. Twisting around life the best we can. Twisting, growing, bending and changing into the beautiful works of art that we are. She said, ‘but how do I untwist myself?’ She didn’t know she was twisted and closed off until she tried to...

Shake off the nasty…

Shake off the nasty…

Those statements that locked time into a small room along with their voice and carefulness crept up around them to replace freedom.

Your voice is not a problem…

Tony Robbins says, ‘when it’s time to increase your energy you do that by movement and sound. We can change everything in our lives if we have enough energy.’ Sounds easy right? As Tony says just get more energy. Come on now get that energy. He goes on to say really...

Transforming Pain into Passion…

The path of the authentic singer Do you feel that you are fighting something all the time? Fighting some invisible force that you just can’t put your finger on? And that you are doing everything you can to move forward and out of where you are but you can't?  ...

Singing and Safety

I've been wondering.       When is it time to stop doing what we're doing when it doesn't feel right for us anymore? Even if we have put years and years of work into it.       This week U.S. gymnast Simone Biles withdrew from...

Digging roots in the playground…

I call the root chakra the Playground. It is the ground of play that we as children were raised in.  Play started with our Mothers and the play between Mother and child with cooing and the wiggling of arms and legs and such as well as the playful and loving sound...

I think confidence is overrated. I really don’t think we’re built like this - to work to achieve confidence. It takes courage to move in this world, and it takes courage to sing. Our vulnerability is our strength and when we try too hard to be confident inadvertently...

Getting out of the way!

I was trying to help Louis find a new pathway for his voice using boring old musical scales.  Up and down, up and down with each time introducing very subtle movements for him to try.  Listen to the vowel! Focus your gaze forward! Soften your eyes! Enjoy...

Rants of a voice teacher…

The rants of a voice teacher…. Do you know the kind of mess that is being made inside the body because of the cork, words, truth etc that gets stuck in the throat?  Not expressing and being silent creates a bottle neck of energy that is like a log jam in the...

The Pleaser and the Voice

Are you a people pleaser?  Putting others needs before yours is understandable yes, but here's the thing, it kills the authentic voice.  Having a voice for real is about coming face-to-face with this protective, knee-jerk grip that speaks first out of our...

Open & Release Your Voice!

The singing voice gets a bad rap. It’s criticized and judged from a very early age. I don’t know what compels grade school music teachers to shame innocent children into ‘standing at the back‘, or to ‘mouth the words,‘ but it happens all the time. There are so many...
