‘At first we must distinguish and then we unite’ – Goethe

Singing requires us to separate the body parts to identify what the role is for each part. For example the throat, solar plexus, the rib cage and belly.  What does each part do? How does it assist the voice to be free and unencumbered.

‘At first we must distinguish…’

The light of the voice activates the energetic nature of each part so it can come back online in its original state.  The diaphragm can be the power centre instead of being trapped in the position of anger or weakness.

What has been held out of our reach, our availability, authenticity and aliveness can come back into awareness and be integrated back into the whole system.

The voice teaches us to wake up our bodies one part at a time in order to bring a unification and wholeness to the body and voice that can then align us back to the moment and not the past.

So often a singers body has been penetrated with the wrong energy – trauma, abuse, careless behaviour and shaming.

Singing helps us to reclaim our natural states of power, clarity, expansion and wellbeing etc. versus the states of trauma and dis-regulation.

The nature of singing is to penetrate in an outward way into space through what we know is the term projection, however it also penetrates (projects) downwards into the body disturbing and pressing into whatever is being held inside.

Emotions, tensions, guarding, defences and protections are impacted from the voice and therein lies an ensuing battle of wills.

The will of the defences to hold on and keep the person safe and protected from the actual sound of the voice (abuser), or, the will to allow the necessary shedding of whatever is in the way of the voice bringing the space that the voice requires to sing naturally and powerfully.

Singing transforms each body centre one at a time and then we can place it back into the whole like a lego piece.  ‘…and then we unite.’

As the knots of the energetic chakras begin to unravel the traumas, abuses and disconnections of the past these powerful centres can align back to their natural flowing, relational state of energy, vibration and love.

Chiaroscuro – dark and light

Mind your tone! Watch your tone with me! You may or may not remember these words from your younger days? We can’t help the tone of our voice telling on us! The truth is inside the tone and not the actual words we are saying. It is our Living Word. Let’s see what’s...

We are like trees…

We are like trees… We are like trees. Twisting around life the best we can. Twisting, growing, bending and changing into the beautiful works of art that we are. She said, ‘but how do I untwist myself?’ She didn’t know she was twisted and closed off until she tried to...

Shake off the nasty…

Shake off the nasty…

Those statements that locked time into a small room along with their voice and carefulness crept up around them to replace freedom.

Transforming Pain into Passion…

The path of the authentic singer Do you feel that you are fighting something all the time? Fighting some invisible force that you just can’t put your finger on? And that you are doing everything you can to move forward and out of where you are but you can't?  ...

Singing and Safety

I did a podcast yesterday and the interviewer shared her experience of when she was a child she was told by a family member to be quiet after she sang.  She shared that at the time that she was singing she felt so open and free and then a familiar voice said to...

Digging roots in the playground…

I call the root chakra the Playground. It is the ground of play that we as children were raised in.  Play started with our Mothers and the play between Mother and child with cooing and the wiggling of arms and legs and such as well as the playful and loving sound...

I think confidence is overrated. I really don’t think we’re built like this - to work to achieve confidence. It takes courage to move in this world, and it takes courage to sing. Our vulnerability is our strength and when we try too hard to be confident inadvertently...

Getting out of the way!

I was trying to help Louis find a new pathway for his voice using boring old musical scales.  Up and down, up and down with each time introducing very subtle movements for him to try.  Listen to the vowel! Focus your gaze forward! Soften your eyes! Enjoy yourself!  I...

Rants of a voice teacher…

The rants of a voice teacher…. Do you know the kind of mess that is being made inside the body because of the cork, words, truth etc that gets stuck in the throat?  Not expressing and being silent creates a bottle neck of energy that is like a log jam in the...

The Pleaser and the Voice

Are you a people pleaser?  Putting others needs before yours is understandable yes, but here's the thing, it kills the authentic voice.  Having a voice for real is about coming face-to-face with this protective, knee-jerk grip that speaks first out of our mouths out...

Open & Release Your Voice!

The singing voice gets a bad rap. It’s criticized and judged from a very early age. I don’t know what compels grade school music teachers to shame innocent children into ‘standing at the back‘, or to ‘mouth the words,‘ but it happens all the time. There are so many...
