Authentic Voices

I think confidence is overrated. I really don’t think we’re built like this – to work to achieve confidence.

It takes courage to move in this world, and it takes courage to sing.

Our vulnerability is our strength and when we try too hard to be confident inadvertently we throw our vulnerability under the bus.

The thing about singing and I mean heartfelt, authentic singing is that confidence usually doesn’t create connection with others it just impresses them.

I don’t want to impress I’d rather find the courage to connect. I’d welcome your thoughts on this.

And…

If you’re waiting to have the confidence to sing and to open to your authentic voice you’ll likely have to wait forever.

However, if somewhere inside of you there’s a teensy bit of terrified excitement in you that wants to sing, now, there, right there that is the stuff that courage can help you to transform into a lions roar.

Chiaroscuro – dark and light

Mind your tone! Watch your tone with me! You may or may not remember these words from your younger days? We can’t help the tone of our voice telling on us! The truth is inside the tone and not the actual words we are saying. It is our Living Word. Let’s see what’s...

We are like trees…

We are like trees… We are like trees. Twisting around life the best we can. Twisting, growing, bending and changing into the beautiful works of art that we are. She said, ‘but how do I untwist myself?’ She didn’t know she was twisted and closed off until she tried to...

Shake off the nasty…

Shake off the nasty…

Those statements that locked time into a small room along with their voice and carefulness crept up around them to replace freedom.

Your voice is not a problem…

Tony Robbins says, ‘when it’s time to increase your energy you do that by movement and sound. We can change everything in our lives if we have enough energy.’ Sounds easy right? As Tony says just get more energy. Come on now get that energy. He goes on to say really...

Transforming Pain into Passion…

The path of the authentic singer Do you feel that you are fighting something all the time? Fighting some invisible force that you just can’t put your finger on? And that you are doing everything you can to move forward and out of where you are but you can't?  ...

Singing and Safety

I've been wondering.       When is it time to stop doing what we're doing when it doesn't feel right for us anymore? Even if we have put years and years of work into it.       This week U.S. gymnast Simone Biles withdrew from...

Digging roots in the playground…

I call the root chakra the Playground. It is the ground of play that we as children were raised in.  Play started with our Mothers and the play between Mother and child with cooing and the wiggling of arms and legs and such as well as the playful and loving sound...

Getting out of the way!

I was trying to help Louis find a new pathway for his voice using boring old musical scales.  Up and down, up and down with each time introducing very subtle movements for him to try.  Listen to the vowel! Focus your gaze forward! Soften your eyes! Enjoy...

Rants of a voice teacher…

The rants of a voice teacher…. Do you know the kind of mess that is being made inside the body because of the cork, words, truth etc that gets stuck in the throat?  Not expressing and being silent creates a bottle neck of energy that is like a log jam in the...

The Pleaser and the Voice

Are you a people pleaser?  Putting others needs before yours is understandable yes, but here's the thing, it kills the authentic voice.  Having a voice for real is about coming face-to-face with this protective, knee-jerk grip that speaks first out of our...

Open & Release Your Voice!

The singing voice gets a bad rap. It’s criticized and judged from a very early age. I don’t know what compels grade school music teachers to shame innocent children into ‘standing at the back‘, or to ‘mouth the words,‘ but it happens all the time. There are so many...
