Being In Charge!

What does it mean to be in charge?

How does it feel in your body? When you hear “being in charge?”

What if this phrase could mean something entirely different… and change everything?

Let’s look at a battery.
A battery holds a charge—a current of energy with its own voltage, its own flow.
We are the same.

We carry a current of energy that moves through us and is held within a charge—thus, being in Charge.

Now let’s break the phrase down even more:
BEING → Be In Charge → be inside the charge.

Be in the flow, instead of being inside thought.
Instead of analyzing, controlling, or tightening, we enter the current.

“Be in” is an invitation—
Live in it.
Breathe with it.
Feel its vibration.

This, to me, is true power: an ever-alive inner charge that lives within all of us. Sometimes it lies dormant, sometimes it erupts like a volcano, only to retreat again.

We might label this as manic, as mood swings, highs and lows—but perhaps it’s simply a reflection of how much charge we are allowing to flow freely through us in any given moment.

This is being human.
The charge is always there—hidden in some, overflowing in others, and cycling through all of us in waves.

Now… being in Control is a very different story.
Can you feel the difference? Being in Charge vs. Being in Control.

We’ve all absorbed conditioning around “being in control”—sometimes it feels safe, sometimes it feels suffocating.

Control often carries a dominating, tightening quality.
Charge feels alive, energetic, expanding.
How do these two feel in your body right now?

In my IBP (Integrative Body Psychotherapy) training, the word charge was central: having a charge, building a charge, losing charge, expanding charge.

Yes, you can interchange “energy” with “charge”—but it doesn’t quite hold the same… well, charge.

Think electricity and current and you’re there. Our upbringing and trauma history deeply shape how we relate to our charge—whether we trust it, fear it, suppress it, or ride it.

I also love the parallel between current as energy and currency as money—a flowing resource that must circulate to have value.

So why am I talking about this in a newsletter on Voice?

Because this flow of charge is exactly what the singing voice needs to move freely and effortlessly.

When we sing without awareness of body charge, we default to control.
We control the sound instead of allowing the energy to move us.
And here’s the key: A beautiful, rich sound depends on a flow of charge, not a control of it.

More to come on this hot topic!

One possible outcome of this shift—from being in control to being in charge—is a transformation in how we relate to others.
Instead of managing, monitoring, or controlling the interaction, we become present.
Rooted in our own current, we meet others from a place of aliveness, openness, and connection.
And from here, our voice doesn’t perform—it flows.

Here is a great way to understand this charge…

Natural Connections: Eyes & Solar Plexus

In my groups, we are exploring Natural Connections — energetic relationships between two areas of the body that support alignment, embodiment, and ultimately, the voice.

🌞 EYES & SOLAR PLEXUS 👁️

🌿 Let the strength in your solar plexus be shared with the clarity and focus in your eyes.
🌿 Use the energy of the solar plexus as fuel to bring more presence into your eyes and into this moment.

The solar plexus holds our power, will, and drive.
The eyes express that energy through presence, direction, and perception.

Just as the Queen (throat) gives voice to our energy,
the Sage (eyes) gives vision to our energy.

When this connection is awakened:
✨ The eyes gain strength and direction.
✨ The body feels supported from within.
✨ The voice becomes rooted, clear, and present.
