Chiaroscuro

Within every tone, word or note lies two opposing energies that come together to bring life and expression to your innermost thoughts and emotions.

Light and dark, masculine and feminine.

Musicians call it treble and bass.

Voice teachers call it head voice and chest voice.

The yoga world refers to these two energies as Yin and Yang.

The Italian school of art and singing call this Chiaroscuro – a way of seeking harmony and balance of both worlds of light and dark in art, work, singing and life.

Chiaroscuro wins hands down.

Chiaro (light) Scuro (dark) - an alchemical mixing of two opposite energies into one which is then reflected through the speaking and singing voice communicating who we are in every moment. Your vocal tone reflects your inner weather; your thoughts, feelings and emotions.

Try it for yourself, sing one note - can you hear the two energies dancing together? Dark and light? And are you able to adjust your tone to find a balance point between the two?
